The 62-year-old has now been left in constant agony after she strained her back trying to lift a 17-stone patient during the course of her employment with East Sussex County Council.
The carer had worked for the council for 26 years prior to the accident but was forced into retirement as a result of the injuries sustained.
Back Injury Compensation Claimed After Suggestions Were Ignored
The carer had previously suffered a similar injury and had complained to her employers about the equipment that was provided for her job. She asked that a gantry hoist be installed to help with lifting patients but her suggestions were ignored.
After sustaining the injury she contacted her trade union, the GMB, who put her in touch with a personal injury solicitor. Her claim for compensation was eventually settled out of court for the sum of £31,500 with a reduction made for contributory negligence. The injuries sustained by the carer have not only forced her into retirement but continue to have an impact on her quality of life.
She commented:“I had worked for the council for a long time and enjoyed my work as a carer. Now that’s gone, I have had to give up work and my back pain effects every aspect of my life. If I even want to cook a meal I have to wait for my husband to get home as I can’t even bend down to get something out of the oven.”
