Career Guidance

Before pursuing a career in personal injury, or any other type of law, it is crucial that you carry out a significant amount of research to ensure that you know exactly what you are letting yourself in for.

Speak to any friends and family who are working in the industry and undertake as much work experience/shadowing as possible before you decide to embark on an expensive and time consuming course of study.

A Career In Personal Injury Law

A career in personal injury law can be very rewarding. Many solicitors rate the satisfaction of helping a seriously injured victim to gain the compensation that they deserve as the best part of the job.

However a career in personal injury is not for everyone and the job is not all about court appearances and satisfied clients.

Personal injury solicitors have to deal with large amounts of paperwork, irate clients and a perception from the general public that they are simply ambulance chasers only interested in claiming their success fee.

What exactly does a personal injury solicitor do?

Essentially a personal injury solicitor will help a client to gain compensation when they have been involved in an accident that wasn’t their fault. Typical tasks and skills required during the course of a personal injury case would include:

  • Investigation
  • Research
  • Liaising with experts and barristers
  • Advising the client
  • Negotiating
  • Calculating client’s financial losses

Although a large proportion of a personal injury solicitors work does involve claiming compensation for minor injuries sustained in road traffic accidents, once you are qualified, or if you are lucky enough as a trainee, you may get to work on more complex cases where liability has been disputed or the level of damages is significant.

One of our solicitors Natasha Cleary describes what her day to day tasks are as a personal injury solicitor.
