Competitions

Your University should offer a variety of competitions/societies for you to take part in.  The most common examples are mooting, quantum competitions and debating .

Why bother?

These competitions are worth attending as they are a great way to improve your confidence at public speaking – which can be a key part of your role as a solicitor.

Many of the skills required of a Solicitor (not just a Personal Injury Lawyer) are developed by participating in competitions such as these.

Employers look for evidence of confident speaking, organisation and a commitment to the law and participation at these events demonstrate those.

They are also a good way to meet other law students and make friends at University. Some competitions are judged by potential future employers so it’s a good idea to try to impress!

Our advice

Have a go! Even if you are shy to start off with, the more practice the better you will be. Confidence is a key attribute law firms look for in the interview process and if you are familiar with public speaking and thinking on the spot this will shine through at your interview. At Duncan Gibbins Solicitors we look for people who have taken the initiative to involve themselves with extra curricular activities and competitions are great examples of this as they are also related to the legal industry.
