£700k Medical Negligence Compensation Claimed By 19 Patients Of Same Surgeon

Surgeon Struck Off And Medical Negligence Compensation Paid After 30 Patient Complaints

A surgeon has been finally struck off the medical register after a number of complaints and successful medical negligence compensation claims. Expert assessors told the General Medical Council that the performance of Puvaneswary Markandoo was ‘so poor that it did not reach the level of a newly-qualified doctor’.

Markandoo was originally suspended on full pay back in 2006, and underwent a first assessment in 2007. She was allowed to continue as a doctor but was told to undertake more training and managed to gain a temporary job in Warrington in 2010. However, she was referred to the GMC again when colleagues reported that it was not safe to leave her on call.

On this occasion the GMC decided that ‘fundamental failings’ made Markandoo a danger to patients and she was removed from the medical register.

Medical Negligence Compensation – Blame For ‘Failing To Devise An Effective System’

In 1994 Markandoo told Observer journalist Ruth Picardi that a lump on her breast was harmless and that a surgical procedure would not be necessary. Two years later an aggressive cancer was diagnosed, a year after that she was dead. Her husband, Matt Seaton commented:

“Ruth was convinced that Dr Markandoo had been the weakest link at a critical moment in the sequence of events that caused the failure to diagnose the pre-cancerous state of the lump in her breast.

“Occasional human error is inevitable in health-care, as it is in everything else, and I don’t blame the NHS or GMC for that, but I do blame them for failing to devise an effective system of checks and review to identify patterns of error and failure.”

Barnsley Hospital, where Markandoo began working in 2005 stated that it conducted checks and received three references with ‘no alerts or causes for concern against Miss Markandoo’s ability to practise’.

The Medical Protection Society, who are currently representing Markandoo, issued a statement on her behalf that stated: “It would be inappropriate for me to comment due to ongoing legal proceedings.”
