PIP Implant Scare: Jean-Claude Mas Detained By Police
A source in France has revealed that Jean-Claude Mas, founder of the PIP breast implant, has been detained by police at his home in southern France. Claude Couty, a former executive of the breast manufacture is also being held by French police.
Around 40,000 women in the UK are believed to have received the controversial implant that contained industrial-grade silicone, rather than medical-grade silicone.
After concerns that the PIP implants have an increased risk of rupture the French and German authorities have advised that anyone with the implants should have them removed. However after a review by the UK Government, the advice in this country is that removal is not necessary unless patients are experiencing pain and discomfort.
Any women concerned about the safety of their implants have been told to contact their GP or private clinic where the implants were fitted.
PIP Implant Scare: 2700 Women Filed Complaints Against PIP Founder
Further alarm has been caused in France after it was revealed that 20 women who had received the PIP implants had been diagnosed with cancer, 16 of whom had breast cancer, but a direct link has yet to be established.
Mas, 72, has admitted that industrial-grade silicone was used at the PIP factory before it closed down in March 2010, however conflicting reports are still emerging about the exact rupture rate of the PIP implant.
Last week the World Health Organisation (WHO) urged any women affected to seek immediate legal advice, and admitted that a clearer picture into the level of rupture rates will emerge once more cases were reported. A spokesperson said: “While the rupture rate of PIP prostheses was observed to be higher than expected in France, rates reported by other national authorities vary.”
