PIP Implant Victims To Meet With Scottish Government

PIP implant patients in Scotland are due to meet Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon to discuss a possible enquiry into the scandal. It is estimated that around 1,300 Scottish women have been affected by the PIP implant scare; with Ms Sturgeon stating that private clinics in the country have a moral duty to help any patients affected.

Jackie Ballie, Labour’s health spokesperson, will accompany the group to meet the minister and wants decisive action on the issue. She said: “I am pleased the health secretary has agreed to this meeting but it cannot afford to be a talking shop or box-ticking exercise. The victims of this scandal deserve answers and expect action.

“There are a plethora of questions following the scandal that remain unanswered and the victims have put forward a powerful case for a full, independent public enquiry to be held here in Scotland.”

PIP Implant Victims Were Living ‘An Absolute Nightmare’

The NHS in Scotland did not use the PIP implants in their procedures; with all patients affected having attended private clinics.

Spokeswoman for the campaign group, Trisha Devine, said that many women had been living an ‘absolute nightmare’ since safety concerns about the PIP implants were made public.

She added: “Some of the women have found that their implants have burst inside of them and others are anxious that the same might happen to them at any moment. It feels like we’ve got ticking time bombs inside of us.”

The government has stated that concerned patients who cannot get support from their private clinics can have their implants removed-but not replaced-by the NHS. An advice line for concerned patients has been set up to provide information for women in Scotland. NHS inform are taking calls seven days a week between 8.00 and 22.00 on 0800 224 488.

A spokesperson for the Scottish government said: “The health secretary will be meeting with the PIP implant Scotland group this afternoon.

“We are supportive of the group and have been very clear that private healthcare providers have an obligation to give their patients the same level of care as our NHS.”
