Harriet Riley, a nine year old girl who developed cerebral palsy due to complications at birth, has received a personal injury compensation award of £2 million, with a further £325,000 annual payment for the rest of her life, after a birth injury lawyer assisted her family in pursuing a claim for medical negligence.
Harriet was born at the Royal Gwent Hospital in June 2002 and was starved of oxygen at birth, resulting in cerebral palsy which has prevented her from speaking or walking as she has grown older. By getting a birth injury lawyer on board, her parents have now won compensation that will go a long way to securing the care of the daughter for her lifetime, after years of struggle.
Her father Christopher explained how Harriet ‘relies on us for absolutely every part of her care’, so to be able to have the financial backing to put a stable and long term plan in place must be a massive relief for the family.
Judge backs Birth Injury Lawyer Claims
The High Court ordered the birth injury compensation to be paid by Aneurin Bevan Health Board, who has issued an apology via their barrister:
‘’The defendants accept that aspects of the care provided were not to the required standard.’’
It has been acknowledged by the relevant medical staff and the hospital in question that an earlier delivery of the child would have been the more favourable option at the time.
The family and Harriet have so far dealt with everything that has come their way admirably and the time has now come to move forward with plans to increase their standard of living, something which they thoroughly deserve through the help of a birth injury lawyer.
Louise Riley commented how her daughter ‘lights up a room’ already, now they can all look forward to a more stable future.
