It has been reported that MPs can now charge 20p a mile in expenses for riding their bicycle to and from work, the justification being that one needs to eat more food for energy in order to peddle and therefore the food bill will be more expensive.
Although this latest charge in the world of expenses may hit a few nerves, more and more workers are choosing to commute to work on their bicycles, safe in the knowledge that they are getting fitter, saving money and helping the environment. What they lose in time, they gain in a sense of eco-friendly satisfaction.
Whilst the car’s their counterparts may drive cause more pollution, the automobile offers much more in the way of protection. A low speed road traffic accident between two vehicles on the road may result in personal injury; compensation for a whiplash injury from a car accident can be a straightforward process when obtaining professional legal advice.
The same incident on a bicycle however can have much more serious connotations; whilst hi-vis jackets, helmets and gloves are a must when out on the road on a bicycle, none of these will offer complete protection from a collision with a vehicle. Compensation claims for broken bones are rightly of higher value but the additional costs of such a road traffic accident take their toll. Whereas the victim of a car driving road traffic accident may need a few days off work whilst their whiplash injury recovers, a cyclist with their leg in a cast may be off work for a much longer period.
Professional legal advice can offer support to those who have suffered from a road traffic accident, the time taken off work to recover can be claimed back along with all other expenses that may be incurred such as travel to hospitals and physiotherapists. Added to that, if care and assistance from friends and family who have stepped in to help out in that time of need, this can also be refunded.
Whilst those on a bicycle are afforded the same rights on the road as a car, there are those drivers on the roads who still fail to acknowledge a bicycle’s right of way. If ever involved in an accident on the road when riding a bicycle, one should always remember that compensation for personal injury is still as much available to a cyclist as it is to a driver or passenger.
