Grandmother Wins 27k Slip Compensation Due To Asda Fall

Serious Back Injury Sustained – Slip Compensation Received

An ex-Asda worker has won £27,000 in slip compensation after suffering a spinal fracture due to slipping on a broken egg in the store warehouse where she worked.

Irene Heslop had been employed in the store as a bakery assistant for seven years prior to the accident and was left unable to walk long distances, use heavy equipment and had requested a return to work on lighter duties once she had partially recovered, only to be told that there were no such positions open, claim the Daily Mail.

Mrs Heslop has been unable to work since the accident involving a broken egg occurred in March 2007. Doctors at Manchester Royal Infirmary confirmed as part of the slip compensation claim, that Mrs Heslop’s lifestyle had been ‘considerably curtailed’ by the accident, and although they had been unable to agree upon the exact extent of her back injuries, one specialists was convinced that she had suffered a fracture to her spine.

Despite never having any disciplinary problems in her seven years at the store, Mrs Heslop has been subjected to nearly five years of wrangling from her former employers. Mrs Heslop claims that Asda could and should have settled far earlier to avoid the on-going discomfort of a now retired former employee who continues to have to receive regular injections and acupuncture to aid her recovery.

Private Detective Followed Mrs Heslop to Counter Slip Compensation Claim

In the immediate aftermath of the accident, a private detective was twice sent by the management of the store to film Mrs Helsop and to prove she was able to work.

It was only during the case, up to three years later, that the grandmother realised she had been followed:

“I felt sick when I saw the footage, it just left me numb. It just seems so over the top for them to follow me around and invade my privacy like that.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes. It’s left me feeling quite unsafe to know someone was following me around with a video camera and I didn’t know about it until three years later.’’

Mrs Heslop has since paid the Department of Work and Pensions £6,000 out of her settlement to pay back the industrial injury benefit she claimed once her statutory sick pay ended after six months of injury hell.

An Asda spokeswoman had this to say about this specific slip compensation claim and the general health and safety of their employees:

“The health and safety of our customers and colleagues is our biggest priority and if we fall short of our high standards, we will work to put things right.

“We always investigate claims thoroughly to make sure we fully understand the facts and can reach the right conclusion for everyone involved.

“We’re sorry for any upset caused to Irene throughout resolving this case, and wish her all the best for the future.’’
