A new Health and Safety Executive (HSE) initiative is aiming to clampdown on the number of workplace accidents in the construction industry.
The HSE will be sending inspectors out onto sites between 20 February and 16 March to improve safety standards in one of the UK’s most dangerous industries.
The inspectors main focus will be high-risk activities that cause a number of workplace accidents every year; working at height, correct equipment installation, ensuring that sites are clear from obstructions and that any waste is removed.
The month long campaign hopes to remind all employers in the construction industry that poor safety standards are unacceptable and that causing avoidable workplace accidents could lead to prosecution.
Workplace Accidents Initiative Hopes To Reduce Work Fatalities
Figures from the HSE have revealed that every day, five work accidents involve falls from height. In 2010/11 50 workers were killed while working in the construction industry with 2298 other major injuries reported.
The HSE Chief Inspector of Construction Phillip White commented:
“The refurbishment sector continues to be the most risky for construction workers, all too often, straightforward practical precautions are not considered and workers are put at risk. In many cases simple changes to working practices can make all the difference.
“Poor management of risks in this industry is unacceptable. As we have demonstrated in the past, we will take strong action if we find evidence that workers are being unnecessarily put at risk.”
