Whiplash is caused by a sudden change in speed, leading to the head rapidly ‘snapping’ backwards and forwards.

A road traffic accident, where a vehicle is hit from the rear, is the typical incident that causes people to suffer a whiplash injury. A car that has been hit from behind by another vehicle will suddenly speed up in a forward direction, causing the body of the driver and passengers to lurch forward. The head and neck will violently jolt backwards and forwards as they attempt to catch up with the body.
