Whiplash Injury – What Can Cause it?
Have you suffered a whiplash injury?
Whiplash is caused by a sudden change in speed, leading to the head rapidly ‘snapping’ backwards and forwards.
A road traffic accident, where a vehicle is hit from the rear, is the typical incident that causes people to suffer a whiplash injury. A car that has been hit from behind by another vehicle will suddenly speed up in a forward direction, causing the body of the driver and passengers to lurch forward. The head and neck will violently jolt backwards and forwards as they attempt to catch up with the body.
Aside from road traffic accidents, a whiplash injury can be caused by any situation where an abrupt change in velocity can occur, leading to the head and neck to be out of sync with the rest of the body.
Sportsmen are particularly prone to suffering whiplash injuries, especially those involved in high contact sports such as rugby or football. Any situation where the neck and head are open and vulnerable to a sudden change in velocity can cause a whiplash injury.
Have you been involved in any similar incidents? You might have suffered a whiplash injury.
